Why Read Fast
Before I address this question directly, let’s get at the other side of this question which has nothing to do with comprehension. When should you not speed read?
Here are a few occasions when you might choose to read at a rather normal pace:
- When you are reading for enjoyment.
- When you are reading something that requires that you hear the words to fully enjoy what you are reading. Examples of this type of reading include poetry and jokes.
Times when you definitely want to speed read:
- Course work for school.
- Personal learning.
Why do I want to read faster and more importantly, why might you? Have you ever been reading a book and realized that you completely spaced on the last two pages? Have you wondered why you do that? Is it because you aren’t interested in the material? Sometimes that might be part of the reason, but I know I space on topics I am very interested in. Maybe because you were tired? Nope that doesn’t account for everything either.
The number one reason you space when you read is because your brain can work faster than you can read. You simply aren’t giving your brain enough to do so, your brain makes up things to do and there you are off in space land.
So, while you might read to get through the material quicker. The main reason you want to read faster is to get your reading speed up closer to the same speed you can think.
I know of one young high school student who had been struggling with some reading homework in history that typically took about an hour and a half to complete each day. A long assignment even for an adult and she read at a relatively fast pace of 300 words per minute.
Not only did it take here a long time to complete, but when she finished, she could not remember significant chunks of what she read. So, she decided to try speed reading and managed to get her speed up to roughly 800 words per minute over the course of a couple weeks.
The result is that now she can read the material in a half an hour to forty five minutes AND she remembers what she read.
If you are having trouble remembering what you read, there is hope and it starts with learning how to read faster.
